CodeCombat Student Spotlight - Kaila

In our CodeCombat Student Spotlight we highlight inspiring students who share their experience and their own journey with CodeCombat.

1.Tell us about yourself.

My name is Kaila and I am 17 years old. I am from Lexington, KY. I am currently enrolled at Maysville Community & Technical College. Had it not been for the second chance I was given, I would not have discovered my love for coding and the places it could take in the future.

2.How did you first learn about computer science?

I was introduced to computer science by Ms. Jones through Khan Academy. I completed the assignments and received a certificate of completion. Next, I was introduced to CodeCombat by Ms. Henry. We participated in CodeCombat challenge for a week. There were almost 400 total students who participated from different states. I was able to stay in the top 10 on the leaderboard and finished in 5th place. I was also introduced to a coding game called Bloxels and was able to create my own video game.

3.How do you think computer science will affect the future?

I feel that technology/computer science will be used for everything that we do and it will continue to be upgraded.

4.What kind of career do you want or what do you want to do when you finish school?

I would like to create websites and/or game design using my knowledge gained from college and self exploring in the computer science area.

5.Can you share your favorite project or accomplishment?

My accomplishment would have to be earning my high school diploma and enrolling into college. I would say my favorite project was earning 5th place in the CodeCombat Initiative and almost finished the course.

6.How do you think you’ll use what you learned with CodeCombat in your future career?

I’ve learned how to use JavaScript to create games and animations. I also learned how to use HTML format for web development. I want to explore more in the computer science field and learn a variety of coding languages so that I can design a game or website.

7.Do you have any advice for other students who want to learn how to code but may be scared or not know where to start?

I never thought I would be coding the way I am today but if I can do it, anyone can. I’ve learned you just need to ask for help. If you have dedication you can make anything happen, even coding.

8.What’s your favorite part about using CodeCombat?

I get to master my skills one level at a time.

9.In 15 years, which of your awesome achievements will we read about in the news?

I am not sure where time will take me because things are changing everyday however, you will read about me helping others and making a difference in the world by developing new ideas related to computer science.
